Is there a candidate prescreening process?
Yes. All candidates must complete a Pre-Screening Questionnaire & Character Assessment, as well as attend a New Investigator Briefing.
What are the required qualifications?
- A strong work ethic and impeccable integrity
- Excellent organization, time management, communication, and typing skills
- An undergraduate degree or at least four years of professional work experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable suitability determination from the OPM, as well as Top Secret security clearance eligibility

- Ability to work independently from home with high-speed Internet (LAN line required, wireless unauthorized) and your own personal computer that is compatible with Microsoft applications (e.g. Word, Excel)
- A current driver's license, a reliable personal vehicle for daily travel, and the ability to travel up to 75 percent of the time for business
- Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
How can I obtain the OPM credentials required to become a Background Investigator?
You must be selected for a Level I Background Investigator position in order to be sponsored for a Single-Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). Additionally, you'll need to successfully complete an eight-week OPM New Investigators Training (NIT) course that will provide you with the required OPM credentials.
How long does it take to obtain a favorable suitability determination by OPM?
If you have an active Top Secret security clearance (or above), the OPM can typically grant a favorable suitability determination within 24 to 48 hours. If you have a Secret, NACI, or Public Trust clearance, or no clearance at all, it will typically take OPM 60 to 120 days to grant a favorable suitability determination.
What does the OPM New Investigators Training (NIT) entail?
The training is an intense, eight-week pass/fail course. The first stage of training is three weeks of instructor-led, web-based/conference call training completed from your home. Training for weeks four, five, and six is conducted in our training facility in Chantilly, Virginia. Students must pass two exams before they can proceed with the final two weeks of training, which is mentoring-based and typically completed back in your home area.
How much does training cost?
You are not responsible for the cost of training and related lodging. However, you will need to pay upfront for your travel costs, which will be reimbursed.
Do I get paid while in training?
Yes. While in training, you will be paid $15 per hour.
Can I take the training while I am awaiting a favorable security determination from OPM?
No. Course material contains proprietary information, and therefore you must be cleared by OPM prior to training.
- What is the pay for a Level I Background Investigator?
Is there any paid vacation, paid holidays, or sick leave?
Yes, you are entitled to 10 annual paid holidays and will accrue 10 paid vacation days over the course of a year. There is no paid sick leave.
Are there any financial penalties if I resign shortly after completing training?
Yes. If you voluntarily resign within 12 months of your hire date, you will be responsible for paying back the full security investigation cost ($4,399), plus a portion of the in-person training cost associated with the three weeks in Chantilly, Virginia.
Does my 20+ years of military experience warrant higher pay as a Level 1 Background Investigator?
Unfortunately, no. For more information, read the View the Level I Background Investigators description.
If I start out as a Level I Background Investigator, how long will it take for me to advance to a Level II?
While meeting or exceeding performance metrics is the overriding factor, the typical time frame is 12 months.
Is there a clear career path within the investigations field?
Yes, there are four levels that accompany progressively higher pay and additional career paths: Case Assignment, Case Review, Team Leader, and Training and Field Supervision.
I believe that I meet all the qualifications, but I haven't been contacted. Why?
Many applicants do meet the minimum qualifications; however, our recruiters must review hundreds of applicants and then select only the most qualified candidates to move forward in the hiring process. Because of the heavy volume of applicants, we are not able to give individual considerations or status updates.
Why do I not see a consultant position listed?
CACI is no longer hiring consultants (independent contractors). However, we are hiring part-time investigators who work 20 hours per week and are eligible to maintain their contract status with OPM vendors.
