- CACI could offer/encourage work from home, virtualized workplace and/or Alternative Work Schedules (one less day to travel
in to work in a pay period) schedules to more of its employees, which would all help in reducing automobile pollution. Since
these are not options for all, we need to keep in mind that as we drive to work - every gallon of gas burned produces 19
pounds of carbon dioxide. We live in an impatient world, so while painful, we need to obey the speed limit to save gas. Also, maintaining a steady, constant speed.
By avoiding rapid acceleration … and deceleration (braking) … can decrease fuel economy by 33%. (The Daily Green)
- Stop using an "identifying page" for every print job and every user. Leave it up to the individual to collect their printouts.
- Start having Deer Park (or any other brand) filtered water machines in the break rooms so people don't have to bring in
bottled water. (The filtered water from the faucet is not usable, nor do employees want to use it.)
- Make front and back printing/copying the default and single-side printing or copying the exception.
- Make scanning the preference over faxing.
- Installing motion sensing lighting in all office locations.
- Stop requiring travelers to mail in hard copies of travel receipts and vouchers.
- Cut down paper usage by sending PDFs of all our documents whenever possible. Our office's location has a copy machine that
will scan a print job, create a PDF and send it to a folder on our server. This way we only have one paper copy of something.
It is easy and works great. Of course, if it is already a Word document (or from any other like program) you can just save it
as a PDF instead of to the printer. (This of course relies on everyone having this feature installed.) Using PDFs would be
great for one-page memos all the way up to large documents. It also makes it easier for people who travel a lot, or who work
from home, to read longer documents because they don't have to lug a clumsy booklet or folder around in addition to their
laptop/PDA. They can take the PDF anywhere, and it won't be misplaced as easily as a paper copy either.
- Auto on/off water faucets in the break rooms and bathrooms. The water is often left running and therefore wasted.*
- Encourage employees to turn off their overhead lights before they leaving for the day, going out to lunch, etc.*
- Encourage employees to pick up litter in and around buildings when they see it.
- The CACI Support Services process for leasing facilities should be modified to incorporate a "Green" review and assessment.
- The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is becoming a common standard for "Green" buildings
under the U.S. Green Building Association (USGBC) at www.usgbc.org . The site has a checklist to applying LEED
specifications to for existing and new buildings. The checklist/rating system could be used either to assess facilities being
considered for lease by CACI and/or for setting minimum standards of newly constructed facilities (Certifications Levels are
Silver, Gold, Platinum.) CACI then can set minimum standards/recommendations/scores, or mandate reviews for every CACI leased
facility to ensure management is aware. The checklist is available at
www.usgbc.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=4093.
- Replace the traditional under the sink, hot water tanks in CACI kitchens with energy-efficient, on demand hot water systems.*
- Require that all employees who use incandescent bulbs for lighting their personal desk and room lighting implements
replace them with energy saving fluorescent lamp/bulbs (CFL).
- Limit, minimize or discourage the use of personal, employee heating devices. These units are usually very inefficient and consume large amounts of electrical
power with little heat output. Many employees place these units close to their under the desk CPUs, which also reduces equipment reliability.
- Have each employee to commit to one, personal, "Go Green" goal - it could save thousands of dollars. Example goals
include: Replacing old bulbs with new, energy-saving ones. Washing hands in cold water. Maintaining a good maintenance
schedule for employee vehicles. Walk (or ride a bike) to work, car-pool and so on. Stop using vending machine lights. We also need to conserve energy at home!
- Do more online presentations and virtual reviews instead of printing hard copies for meetings. The bigger the document …
the bigger the group … the greater the impact.
- All CACI organizations should establish Car Pool Clubs within their organization. By doing so, CACI will be providing a
positive alternative to the four-day work week schedule that has been proposed by multiple individuals, which could
potentially impact client support and relations. Car Pool Clubs would assist employees with cutting the stress of expenses on
gas prices by rotating/taking turns driving which splits the expense with other co-workers (instead of paying $100 in gas to
get to work every week, I may only need to spend $50 because, now as part of the Car Pool Club, I'm not driving every day). I
believe this option also assists in boosting employee morale as it encourages co-workers to get to know each other a little
better and further promotes CACI's "team" spirit throughout the organization which, in turn, could promote better productivity
among the workforce which better benefits our CACI to client support and relationships.
* Several employees have submitted this "going green" idea.
