- As a company, CACI also may want to look at paid, days off for volunteering in the community. Institute twice annual,
company-wide "CACI Cares Days" so employees could be paid for Holi-Help-Days. Employees could do anything - helping at
community gardens, read at schools/hospitals or participate at National Mall activities or help at area food banks.
- Our division, under Lee Voegler, participates regularly in the "Adopt a Highway" program. We sponsor a street near 4114
Legato Road. Other offices may want to do the same in their states nationwide.
- I suggest a goal of planting ten trees per CACI location.
- Hybrid computer hard drives - used for desk - and laptops) have large caches (like a flash drive). This allows the hard
drive to drop many data to the flash drive. As a result, the hard drive does not have to spin very often, saving power and breakdown.
- Install shower facilities at CACI offices that currently do not have them. Then, people who want to bike to work can do so
and wash up at the office. Taking cars off the road would help the environment and commuting congestion.
- Establish satellite offices in outlying areas, particularly near Front Royal or Winchester, VA. I live in Front Royal and
face a 1½-hour commute each way. With the never ending gas price increases it would truly help! Satellite workers could come
to Ashburn once or twice a week, as needed, to pick up or drop off files, and so on. We could assign a designated courier to each satellite office.
- I like the idea of working from home a few days a week. I have high speed Internet access and unlimited long distance
access from my computer. I can do almost everything at home that I do at the office. I even have a separate office. (Four
10-hour days instead of five eight-hour days to accomplish a 40-hour work week. Or work from home a few days a week. Most
correspondence is done through email, which could easily be accomplished at home. Thanks to the Internet, most jobs can be
done at home.*) Flex work schedules work well in the government. Four-day weeks or
telecommuting are good ways to save a bunch on gas and on commuting time. Virtual offices - wherever we can - would also
reduce overhead significantly.*
- Put keycard readers in the stairwells at the Ballston HQ so employees can use the stairs to go from floor to floor. This
saves electricity, reduces wait times for those who need the elevators and encourages exercise. The majority of Ballston
employees work in the lower floors of the building anyway.
- Promote holidays like Arbor Day and Earth Day more.
- Have giveaways of reusable water bottles, Smart Plugs, organic cotton T-shirts, etc.
- Encourage the janitorial staff to use environment friendly cleaning products.
- Have more incentives for those employees who walk, ride a bike and/or car pool to work.
- Possibly a corporate contest to seek employee energy saving ideas. Great publicity and employee awareness here.
* Several employees have submitted this "going green" idea.
