Data Warehouse for U.S. Postal Service
In the face of increased competition, the United States Postal Service (USPS) recognized a need to improve how its logistics organization plans and use air and surface-based commercial, dedicated and postal-owned resources for U.S. mail delivery.
As part of this effort CACI partnered with the USPS Logistics organization to design, develop and pilot a transportation logistics data warehouse system which would provide the necessary data to
- Offer better service delivery, particularly during high volume seasons
- Reduce costs, such as those incurred from under utilization of contracted services
- Enhance overall competitiveness
To develop the pilot CACI
- Helped document critical business requirements
- Assessed/selected various commercial Data Warehouse tools, particularly data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) tool sets
- Developed both logical and physical data designs using advanced data dimension modeling techniques
- Prepared data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) specifications
- Developed both software routines to perform the ETL specifications and the end user interface
- Developed a pilot front end using Oracle Discoverer
- Evaluated web-based OLAP tools including Brio, Business Objects and MicroStrategy, and implementation of the front end tool using WebIntelligence from Business Objects
- Developed the Windows NT-based pilot and planned the migration to UNIX
- Trained end users on using the Data Warehouse as part of their normal course of business
