To win a position on the Hot Growth Scoreboard a company must excel in three different financial measures at the same time. Initial company rankings are determined using three-year results for sales growth, earnings growth and return on invested capital. To determine the final composite ranking each company's results are then weighted by the sum of 0.5 times its rank in return on total capital plus 0.25 times each of its two growth ranks.
Candidates are chosen from all publicly held companies with revenues between $50M and $1.5B, a market cap of at least $25M and a stock price of at least $5 per share. Companies with recent earnings declines or whose stock has under performed the Standard & Poor's Industrial Composite Index are not considered.
